Build on Your CNA Experience
Transitioning from CNA training to home health care involves understanding how caregiving responsibilities are applied in a home or community-based environment. Our program combines classroom instruction with competency-based skills practice and supervised field experience to help students apply their knowledge to personal care and health-related tasks.

8-hour externship required after successful completion of the written modules and skills re-demonstration
Laboratory-Based Skills Practice
Practical caregiving requires more than understanding procedures on paper. During training, students practice required skills in a laboratory setting and complete competency examinations throughout the course.
Before moving to the externship, students must successfully complete the required written modules and demonstrate the required skills again in the laboratory setting.
Supervised 8-Hour Externship
The program includes an 8-hour externship that gives students an opportunity to apply their training in an actual care environment. Under supervision, students focus on the appropriate delivery of personal care and health-related care while gaining experience with the responsibilities associated with home health aide services.
At the externship site, the program provides a Registered Nurse Instructor-to-student ratio of one instructor for every three students. This small-group arrangement allows for direct supervision and guidance as students apply their skills.
Externship Settings
Depending on availability and the applicable affiliation arrangement, the externship may be completed in one of the following settings:
- Home care setting
- Congregate care setting
- Assisted living facility
Externship experiences take place at facilities or care settings with which the school has an Affiliation Agreement.
What Students Can Expect
The program begins with the required eight written modules and laboratory-based skills training. Once students successfully complete the written requirements and re-demonstrate the required competencies, they proceed to the supervised 8-hour externship to apply personal-care and health-related skills in a real-world care setting.
This progression gives CNA-trained students an opportunity to connect their existing healthcare knowledge with the specific responsibilities and environment of home health care.
